We get this question a lot: Why does Mainspring of Ephrata focus so much time, energy, and funding on Main Street? Don’t you care about the rest of the Borough? The answer is a resounding yes—we absolutely care about every neighborhood, every street, and every business across Ephrata. But revitalization doesn't happen all at once or everywhere at the same time. It requires a focused, strategic, and proven approach.
That’s why we follow the Main Street Approach, a nationally recognized model for revitalizing communities from the inside out. Mainspring is proud to be a designated PA Main Street program community and nationally accredited by Main Street America. Our focus on downtown isn’t about playing favorites—it’s about laying a strong, sustainable foundation for the entire Borough.
Why Start with Main Street?
Because when Main Street thrives, the whole town benefits. A vibrant downtown sends economic, cultural, and social ripples across the community. It draws tourism, supports local entrepreneurs, builds pride, and even boosts property values.
That’s not just theory—it’s happening here in Ephrata.
Mainspring’s work is rooted in the five pillars of the Main Street Approach: Economic Vitality, Design, Promotion, Organization, and Clean & Green. And while our work starts downtown, the results reach far beyond.
Real Impact Across the Borough
In just six years, we’ve helped bring exciting and lasting improvements to Ephrata:
Events That Spark Economic Energy
Our community events—like the award-winning First Saturdays and the beloved Christmas Tree Lighting—do more than entertain. They bring people downtown, support local businesses, and draw regional attention to Ephrata’s charm and culture. These events are designed to drive foot traffic, spark interest in our town, and foster connection.
Supporting Our Local Business Owners
We know that lasting revitalization depends on strong local businesses. That’s why we offer programs like the Façade Improvement Grant and Revolving Loan Fund to help downtown property and business owners invest in their buildings and operations.
And just to be clear:
These programs are not funded by the Borough of Ephrata.
They’re made possible through support from the PA Department of Community & Economic Development (DCED), along with corporate sponsors, private donors, and competitive grants.
Because funding and resources are limited, we have to be strategic. By strengthening downtown first—the “heart” of Ephrata—we’re setting the stage for borough-wide revitalization. A strong heart pumps life into the entire body. It’s the same with a town.
Long-Term Work with Long-Term Vision
Revitalization isn’t a quick fix. It’s a long-term investment—and sometimes, progress comes in waves. Businesses may come and go. Plans evolve. But one thing remains constant: our commitment to Ephrata’s future.
To support that commitment, we helped launch the Downtown Ephrata Property & Business Owners’ Association—giving local owners a stronger voice, a reliable support system, and a place to collaborate and grow.
So… Why Main Street?
Because strategy, history, and national best practices all point to the same answer: It’s the best place to start.
Main Street is where we plant the seeds of revitalization—so the entire community can flourish. Mainspring is here not just for downtown, and not just for today. We’re here for all of Ephrata, for the long haul.
