Ephrata’s Franklin Street Mural Project: A Colorful Tapestry of Community and Arts

In a vibrant blend of creativity, community engagement, and urban beautification, the Franklin Street Mural Project is set to transform a once-drab parking lot into a stunning work of public art in Ephrata, Pennsylvania. This exciting initiative, spearheaded by Mainspring of Ephrata and supported by the Borough of Ephrata, marks the beginning of a five-year Public Arts Initiative aimed at creating a Downtown Ephrata Art Walk.

The project, partially funded by grants from the Lancaster County Community Foundation and the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, focuses on painting a large-scale mural on the cinder block walls framing the Franklin Street Public Parking lot. This location was strategically chosen to serve multiple purposes: improving wayfinding to an underutilized parking area, beautifying a stark urban space, and fostering a sense of community pride and ownership.

The mural’s design will center around the concept of a quilt, symbolizing the rich tapestry of Ephrata’s culture, assets, and identity. This theme was carefully selected to represent the diverse cultures within the community and create an eye-catching landmark that will serve as both art and a practical wayfinding tool.

Mainspring of Ephrata, a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life through economic and community development, is at the helm of this innovative project. Their commitment to inclusivity and community well-being aligns perfectly with the proven benefits of public art, which include improving community health, fostering inclusivity, generating revenue opportunities, and transforming neglected spaces into vibrant gathering places.

Mainspring formed the Public Arts Committee that is helping to shepherd the project through to completion. They developed the vision and rules for the project, and in a unique twist that emphasizes community involvement, a call for submissions was sent to local artists to submit their quilt-inspired designs. The top three concepts were selected by the committee based on criteria including cultural representation, visual appeal, and feasibility. Those top three designs were sent to the public for vote.

Kristin Groome-Rex’s design (rendering above, design will differ slightly) won the popular vote and work on the mural will begin in Fall of 2024. Members of the Public Art committee have power washed the walls in preparation for the new mural. Stay tuned to this page for further updates and calls for painters.

Ms. Groome-Rex will receive money to complete the project, along with promotional opportunities and the honor of having her signature on the final piece. However, her role extends beyond creation to include management of community participation in the painting process. This collaborative approach will involve community members and students from the Ephrata Area School District in bringing the mural to life, fostering a deep sense of ownership and pride in the artwork.

As Ephrata embarks on this colorful journey, the Franklin Street Mural Project stands as a testament to the power of public art in transforming spaces and uniting communities. It’s not just about beautifying a wall; it’s about weaving together the diverse threads of Ephrata’s identity into a vibrant, visual story that will inspire and engage for years to come.

This project is more than just paint on a wall – it’s a celebration of Ephrata’s spirit, a boost to local economic development, and a step towards a more inclusive and visually engaging community. As the mural takes shape, it will undoubtedly become a source of pride for Ephrata residents and a captivating attraction for visitors, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the town’s cultural landscape.
