The Business of Building Community: Mainspring’s Economic Impact

Posted on October 25, 2024 by Christine Myers

When I joined Mainspring two years ago, I was simply looking to give back to my hometown. What I discovered was an organization that's doing far more than community service – it's transforming Ephrata's economic landscape one project at a time.

A Vision for Vibrancy
At its core, Mainspring believes in creating a community where people want to live, work, and play. This isn’t just about beautifying streets or hosting events – it’s about building a sustainable economic future for our town. And the results speak for themselves.

Take our latest project at Whistle Stop Plaza. Thanks to a $115,000 grant, we’re installing a shade system that will make this central gathering space usable year-round. It might seem like a simple addition, but it’s exactly these kinds of thoughtful improvements that drive foot traffic to local businesses and create opportunities for community connection.

Innovation in Motion
Our partnership with Lititz Bikeworks brought the Ephrata Bike Share program to life with $8,000 in community fundraising. This initiative does double duty – it connects our beautiful rail trail to downtown businesses while offering residents and visitors an eco-friendly way to explore our town. It’s the kind of forward-thinking amenity that catches the attention of potential new residents and businesses looking for a progressive community to call home.

Creating Unique Destinations
The Heatherwood Bike Park and Ephrata Unleashed Dog Park might sound like pure recreation, but they’re actually powerful economic drivers. Partially funded through grants of $10,000 and $25,000 respectively, these amenities make Ephrata stand out from neighboring towns. They draw visitors who shop in our stores, dine in our restaurants, and sometimes even decide to make Ephrata their home.

Investing in Our Future
We’re particularly proud of our business support initiatives. Our Revolving Loan Fund program, partnered with Ephrata National Bank, offers up to $100,000 in bridge funding for local businesses. Our Facade Improvement Program has already helped five businesses enhance their storefronts with access to $50,000 in grant funding, preserving our historic charm while boosting property values.

Art and Economics
Our commitment to public art, exemplified by the Franklin Street Mural Project funded through $17,000 in grants, goes beyond aesthetics. Studies show that areas with vibrant public art scenes experience increased property values and enhanced business activity. This investment in creativity directly contributes to our town’s economic vitality.

Community Spirit in Action
The numbers tell a compelling story: 1,942 volunteer hours contributed last year, $70,000 raised for free community events including First Saturday events, Happy Hour Wednesdays, Tree Lighting, Holiday Market, and Ephrata Unexpected. But the real impact goes beyond statistics. It’s in the energy you feel during our community gatherings, the pride on display in our public art, and the buzz of activity in our downtown area.

Looking Forward
We’re proud of our partnership with the Borough of Ephrata, and most of our initiatives are funded through private and corporate donations, sponsorships, and grants. This community support is what allows us to continue our work in making Ephrata a destination town with a thriving economy.

As we look to the future, we’re excited about the possibilities ahead. Whether it’s through our upcoming ExtraGive event or direct donations, every contribution helps us maintain our momentum. Together, we’re not just improving our town – we’re creating a resilient community that will thrive for generations to come.
