What happens when you combine athletic inspiration with small-town charm? You get the perfect recipe for economic vitality and community pride. Ephrata is about to find out firsthand as we prepare to welcome hundreds of athletes and their families for two major sporting events this summer. These competitions represent far more than athletic achievement – they're catalysts for business growth, community engagement, and the kind of positive exposure that transforms visitors into advocates for our remarkable town.
At Mainspring of Ephrata, we understand that recreational events are powerful economic drivers that bring tourists to our community, benefiting local businesses and strengthening our town’s foundation. This summer, we’re excited to welcome two major sporting events that will showcase Ephrata and the greater Lancaster County region.
Tourism as an Economic Driver
Pennsylvania’s Travel Industry generates more than $43.3 billion annually from visitor spending and supports over half a million jobs. Tourism brings in more visitors, which increases consumer spending in local businesses, especially in retail and hospitality, helping existing businesses succeed and grow. When recreational events choose our region, they create sustained economic impact that extends far beyond the competition itself.
Got the Nerve? Triathlon Comes to Ephrata
We’re absolutely thrilled to welcome the Got the Nerve? Triathlon to Ephrata for the very first time at Thomas P. Grater Community Park on Sunday, June 22, 2025, beginning at 7:30 AM. In its 21st year, this inspiring event, hosted by the IM ABLE Foundation, challenges stereotypes about disability and redefines what’s possible for people with physical, cognitive, or emotional challenges.
Founded by Chris Kaag, a former U.S. Marine, the race offers multiple participation levels including Sprint Triathlon (300-yard swim, 11-mile bike, 5K run), Super Sprint (150-yard swim, 5-mile bike, 1-mile run), and Youth Splash & Dash events. With free race entry for adaptive athletes and dedicated volunteer support, this event truly welcomes everyone. We’re honored that Ephrata has been chosen as the new home for this incredible event.
Pennsylvania State USBC Mixed Tournament
The greater Lancaster County region will also host the 33rd Annual Pennsylvania State USBC Mixed Tournament from June 14th through July 20th, hosted by the Lancaster USBC. This bowling tournament brings participants from across Pennsylvania to our area for competitions occurring throughout the month, creating sustained economic impact through extended stays, dining, and shopping. Tournament participants often arrive early to practice and frequently bring family members who explore local attractions while the athletes compete.
Economic Impact Beyond Event Day
These events demonstrate how recreational tourism enhances quality of life and helps businesses retain talent seeking a vibrant community with social and recreational opportunities. Parks and recreational facilities can increase sales and tax revenue while positioning Ephrata as a destination rather than just a place people pass through. Outdoor recreation activities in Pennsylvania account for almost $17 billion in salaries and wages and over $300 million in federal, state, and local tax revenue.
Supporting Local Businesses
Both events directly benefit our local economy through increased foot traffic, hotel bookings, restaurant visits, and retail spending. For many visitors, this will be their first introduction to Ephrata, creating opportunities from restaurants serving pre-race breakfasts to retail shops and gas stations. Local businesses understand this opportunity and are stepping up to welcome visitors—several businesses throughout the area are offering special discounts to tournament participants, recognizing that today’s visiting athlete often becomes tomorrow’s returning tourist.
Building Community Pride
These sporting events showcase Ephrata’s commitment to accessibility, community support, and outdoor recreation—values that attract both visitors and potential new residents. As a designated Main Street Matters program, Mainspring transforms our historic town into a captivating destination for visitors seeking authentic small-town charm with modern amenities.
How You Can Support
Whether you’re ready to compete, volunteer, or cheer from the sidelines, there are many ways to support these events and our local economy:
These sporting events remind us that recreational tourism is more than entertainment—it’s an economic engine that fuels community growth and vitality. At Mainspring of Ephrata, we’re proud to promote events that strengthen our local economy while embodying the values that make our community special.
