New Hobbies to Try in the New Year

Posted on January 19, 2022 by Lisa Willwerth

Ditch the New Year's resolutions and explore a variety of hobbies that will keep you happy and healthy all year round!

It’s a new year, and this January, instead of creating hard-to-keep resolutions, we recommend trying on a few new hobbies for size! Luckily Ephrata is full of opportunities for you to explore new activities, whether they are creative, athletic, relaxing, or adventurous! Not sure where to start? We’ve compiled a few local activities to help you explore Ephrata and uncover some of your new favorite pastimes!

Biking

This year, get outdoors on two wheels and enjoy 7.5 miles of paved trail at The Warwick to Ephrata Rail-Trail (WERT)! The WERT stretches from downtown Ephrata to Lititz and features lovely farmland views along the way. If mountain biking is more your speed, check out the Ephrata Bike Park at Heatherwood. Located adjacent to the WERT, The park features a pumptrack, multiple skills areas for beginner, intermediate and advanced riders, and 1.5 miles of singletrack trails. Wherever you bike, stop by Green Mountain Cyclery first to get a bike tune-up and check out all of their accessories.

Martial Arts

Get a total body workout and learn new Martial Arts techniques at Ephrata Martial Arts! EMA is a top-notch training facility that offers adult classes for Striking, Grappling, and Mixed Martial Arts. In addition, each class includes a self-defense component. Classes for kids ages 3.5 and up are also available.

Crafting

If you are looking to delve into crafting, The Art of Recycle is an incredible resource in Ephrata that has all the supplies you need, all at a discounted rate! The Art of Recycling will be your first stop when looking for supplies from sewing materials, paper, paints, and more. They also offer a variety of workshops and classes for children to improve their craft and stretch their creative muscles.

Photography

Have you ever considered exploring the world of photography? Whether you are interested in action, landscape, or animal photography, Cardinal Camera Ephrata can help outfit you with the tools you need! So stop by to check out their camera selection or find the right accessories to help you snap the perfect shot.

Games

Have you been wanting to revisit a favorite old video game but have no way to play it? Complete in Box has various console systems and games, from vintage to modern! Jump back into your old favorites or try out something new. If the game you got doesn’t meet your gaming needs, they buy, sell and trade pre-loved games! If the arcade was more your scene, they also have a variety of retro games you can play in-store. For an utterly nostalgic arcade experience, swing by Gameseum to play pinball, arcade games, DDR, and more! Gameseum allows you to ditch the tokens and pay a flat rate per hour so you can enjoy all of the games without worrying about spare change.

Whether you want to add to your list of current hobbies or try something new, the important part is that you spend time this year doing something you enjoy while supporting the local Ephrata community! If you are interested in a hobby that wasn’t on our list, do a quick search to see if it is available locally so that you can continue to support our amazing community.
