Ephrata Invites Artists of All Ages to Create a Main Street Masterpiece for America’s 250th

Posted on June 16, 2026 by Christine Myers

Main Street is about to become the most colorful place in Lancaster County. On Friday, July 3, Mainspring of Ephrata presents the 4th annual Chalk the Walk, a free, family-friendly celebration inviting artists of all ages to transform downtown sidewalks into a sweeping open-air gallery with a patriotic theme in honor of America's 250th birthday.

This summer’s event shifts from its usual First Saturday slot to a First Friday — kicking off the Independence Day weekend while keeping the holiday itself free for celebrations with family and friends.

Joining in is easy. Begin at the Whistle Stop Plaza, 16 E. Main St., anytime between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. to register and receive your assigned canvas — a dedicated spot on the downtown sidewalk. Artists can sign up for one five-foot-square space or team up with friends and make a mini-mural with canvases as large as five feet by twenty feet. You’ll also pick up everything you need to create: professional-grade chalk pastels and blending foam, all provided free of charge. Then it’s time to get to work! When your masterpiece is complete, simply return any unused supplies to the plaza.

No experience (or talent!) required — whether you’re a seasoned sketcher or a first-timer, you’ll be amazed at what you can create. Professional-grade supplies elevate the artwork well beyond typical sidewalk chalk. A tip for ambitious artists: plan your design ahead of time. The downtown’s paver sidewalks naturally lend themselves to drawing by grid, making it easy to map out even the most complicated creations square by square.

Then comes the fun of choosing a favorite. Beginning at 4:30 p.m., visitors are encouraged to stroll the streets, take in the patriotic creations, and cast their votes. Community voting runs until 6:45 p.m., with winners announced at 7 p.m.

As the chalk dust settles, the celebration cranks up. At 4:30 p.m., the party begins at the Whistle Stop Plaza, where DJ Ray takes over from 4:45 to 8 p.m. Two left feet? No worries! Learn the latest with Lessons by Sarah. DJ Ray brings the electric energy of neon-lit nightlife with an eclectic mix that goes far beyond traditional country, blending honky-tonk classics with today’s hottest pop and hip-hop hits. No dance experience needed — just bring your boots, sneakers, or flip-flops and join in.

Hungry dancers and art admirers will find plenty to fuel the evening, with food and drink from Cocalico Valley VFW Post 3376, Greco’s Italian Ice & Ice Cream, Inna’s Pierogi Shop, Old Republic Distillery Tasting Room, Pour Man’s Brewing Company, Rad.ish Food Truck, and Victory BBQ.

Shoppers are in for a treat as well. Nearly 20 craft vendors will line the plaza with an amazing array of handmade goods — pottery, woodwork, glass art, gourmet cookies, local wine, and one-of-a-kind finds you won’t see anywhere else. These talented makers are one of downtown’s best-kept secrets, and visitors are encouraged to browse, chat with the artisans, and take home something special. Many downtown retailers will also be open with specials throughout the day, making it the perfect occasion to explore everything Main Street has to offer.

“Chalk the Walk captures everything we love about this community — creativity, connection, and celebration,” said Joy Ashley, executive director of Mainspring of Ephrata. “Watching Main Street transform into a gallery of patriotic art for America’s 250th birthday is going to be something truly special.”

Chalk the Walk is part of Mainspring of Ephrata’s First Saturday summer series, which brings free, family-friendly programming downtown from June through September. Mainspring is a designated Main Street Matters program through the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (PA DCED), working to strengthen downtown Ephrata through events, business support, and community partnerships.
